This 3D Printing Cycle Time Estimator adds setup, printing, cooldown, and recurring post-processing time to estimate the elapsed cycle for one build. It is useful for additive manufacturing operators and planners who need a simple machine-occupancy estimate for quoting, queue planning, or comparing process changes.

Different printing technologies define start and finish differently, so the calculator uses explicit time components rather than assuming a universal cycle. Enter only the phases that meaningfully occupy the modeled production cycle. For hands-off post-processing performed away from the printer, you may omit that time if the goal is strictly printer availability rather than total job lead time.

1. Enter setup time
Include recurring preparation that belongs to each build, such as machine preparation or loading that you want counted in the cycle.

2. Enter print duration
Use the expected machine printing time in hours for one complete build.

3. Add cooldown or removal delay
Include any required wait before the build can be safely removed or the machine can proceed.

4. Add recurring post-process time
Enter only post-processing time that belongs in your chosen cycle definition. Leave it at zero when external finishing does not constrain the printer.

5. Review the breakdown
Use total cycle hours, printing share, and non-print time to see where elapsed time is concentrated.

Print time in hours is converted to minutes before the components are added.

What the result means

The main result is the elapsed time assigned to one modeled 3D-printing build under the phase definition you entered.

The estimate does not predict print duration from geometry, layer height, material, or toolpath. Use slicer or machine estimates for the print-time input when available.

Given: 15 minutes setup, 7.25 hours print time, 35 minutes cooldown/removal, and 20 minutes recurring post-processing.

Calculation: Print time = 7.25 × 60 = 435 minutes. Total cycle = 15 + 435 + 35 + 20 = 505 minutes = 8.42 hours.

Result: 505 minutes, or about 8.42 hours per build.

Printing occupies about 86.1% of the modeled elapsed cycle.

Should overnight idle time after a print finishes be included?

Include it only if it blocks the machine from starting the next build and you want the cycle estimate to reflect that operational reality.

Can I leave post-processing at zero?

Yes. Use zero when post-processing happens independently and does not belong in the cycle definition you are modeling.

Why does the calculator ask for print time instead of model dimensions?

Print duration depends on technology, slicing settings, geometry, material, and machine behavior. A slicer or machine estimate is usually a better direct input.

How should failed prints be handled?

This cycle-time tool models one build cycle. Failure probability and lost capacity are better handled through yield or effectiveness analysis.

Is this the same as customer lead time?

No. Customer lead time may also include queue time, design review, material availability, inspection, shipping, and other delays outside the build cycle.
