Net position = Payments + Refundable credits − Liability − Offsets

Refund = max(0, Net position). Amount due = max(0, −Net position).

What the result means

The main result shows only the nonnegative refund amount after all entered deductions.

Real refunds can change because of nonrefundable credits, carryforwards, verification, penalties, interest, or jurisdiction-specific rules.

Given: Payments = $4,200; refundable credits = $800; liability = $3,600; offsets = $250.

Calculation: Preliminary refund = $4,200 + $800 − $3,600 = $1,400. Final refund = $1,400 − $250 = $1,150.

Result: The estimated after-deduction refund is $1,150.

What is a preliminary refund?

It is the excess of payments and refundable credits over liability before offsets are subtracted.

Should nonrefundable credits be entered here?

Usually no. Nonrefundable credits generally reduce liability first and should be reflected in the liability figure or modeled separately.

What happens if the result is below zero?

The displayed refund becomes zero, and the breakdown shows the remaining amount due.

Can offsets be larger than the preliminary refund?

Yes. In that case the refund is fully absorbed and the excess contributes to the remaining negative position.
