AI Content Cost Estimator

This estimator calculates the production cost of AI-assisted written content by combining model charges, human review time, and fixed platform expenses. It also compares that total with a human-only workflow using the same volume and labor rate.

It is useful for editorial teams, agencies, ecommerce operations, and internal communications groups that need a practical unit-cost model. The comparison is most informative when review time includes fact-checking, brand editing, formatting, and approvals—not just the initial generation step.

1. Enter content volume
Count the articles, descriptions, posts, or other items in the planning period.

2. Estimate human-only effort
Use the average minutes needed to create one finished item without AI.

3. Set the labor rate
Enter the hourly cost for the person or blended team doing the work.

4. Add AI unit cost
Include generation, enrichment, or workflow charges attributable to each item.

5. Estimate review effort
Capture editing and quality-control time required after generation.

6. Include fixed costs
Add monthly subscriptions or workflow fees that do not vary by item.

7. Compare totals
Review AI-assisted cost and estimated savings against the human-only baseline.

AI-assisted cost = (items × AI cost per item) + (items × review minutes ÷ 60 × hourly rate) + fixed cost

Where:

  • Items: number of finished content units
  • AI cost per item: variable generation and processing cost
  • Review minutes: human post-generation time per item
  • Human-only cost: items × human minutes ÷ 60 × hourly rate

Assumptions: All items are assumed to use the same average effort and unit cost. Rework beyond the entered review time is not included.

What the result means

Use the primary result together with the detailed breakdown. Scenario assumptions can materially change the estimate.

This planning tool does not replace provider documentation, a production benchmark, or professional advice.

Given: 100 items, 45 human-only minutes per item, a $40 hourly rate, $0.35 AI cost per item, 10 review minutes per item, and $50 fixed cost.

Calculation:
Human-only cost = 100 × 45 ÷ 60 × $40 = $3,000.
AI variable cost = 100 × $0.35 = $35.
Review cost = 100 × 10 ÷ 60 × $40 = $666.67.
AI-assisted total = $35 + $666.67 + $50 = $751.67.

Result: Estimated savings are $2,248.33 for the period, before any additional rework or publishing costs.

Should I use drafts or published items as volume?

Use the unit that matches your cost goal. Published items are usually better when rejected drafts and rework are already reflected in average review time.

Does AI cost per item include image generation?

Only if images are part of the workflow you are modeling. Otherwise estimate image costs separately with a dedicated tool.

How do I handle different content lengths?

Create separate estimates for short, medium, and long content, or use a weighted average based on your expected mix.

Why can review cost exceed model cost?

For many workflows, human editing and approval are the dominant costs. Low API charges do not remove the need for quality control.

Is lower cost always the better option?

No. Compare cost with quality, conversion, compliance risk, and turnaround time. A cheaper workflow that creates more corrections may not be economical.
