CDN Traffic Utilization Rate Estimator

The CDN Traffic Utilization Rate Estimator measures how much of an available CDN traffic capacity is actually being used. It compares observed content delivery traffic with a provisioned or practical capacity ceiling and expresses the relationship as a percentage.

This ratio helps teams spot persistent over-provisioning or workloads that are approaching their assumed ceiling. The calculator is intentionally neutral: a high or low percentage is not automatically good or bad because resilience targets, burst headroom, traffic seasonality, and provider limits vary by architecture.

Utilization rate
Unused capacity
Available capacity
Used workload

1. Enter actual usage
Provide the content delivery traffic consumed during the period in GB.

2. Enter available capacity
Use the comparable capacity limit in the same GB and time period.

3. Check unit consistency
Do not mix daily usage with monthly capacity or different billing units.

4. Review utilization
Read the percentage together with the used and remaining capacity figures.

Utilization rate = Used workload ÷ Available capacity × 100 Unused capacity = Available capacity − Used workload

Both values must use the same unit (GB) and period. Utilization above 100% means the entered workload exceeds the entered capacity assumption.

What the result means

The main result is a planning metric for content delivery traffic; use it with consistent units and scope when comparing scenarios.

Actual provider billing or operational limits can differ because of tiers, discounts, quotas, regions, architecture, and contract terms.

Given: 60,000 GB used and 100,000 GB available in the same month.

Calculation: 60,000 ÷ 100,000 × 100 = 60%. Unused capacity = 100,000 − 60,000 = 40,000 GB.

Result: The modeled utilization rate is 60%.

What does utilization above 100% mean?

It means the usage value is larger than the capacity value you entered. Check whether the periods and units match, then verify whether the capacity figure is a true limit or only a planning target.

Should I always aim for 100% utilization?

No. Many systems intentionally preserve headroom for bursts, failover, or growth. The right target depends on service behavior and reliability requirements.

Can I use requests per second instead of monthly units?

Yes, if both usage and capacity are expressed in the same unit and over the same basis. The ratio itself is unitless.

Why might billing utilization differ from this result?

Providers may meter several dimensions, apply tiers, or bill peaks rather than the simple capacity measure used here.

How often should I recalculate it?

Use a period that matches your planning cycle and workload variability. Comparing the same metric over time is more useful than a single isolated reading.
