What the result means

The result is the absolute emissions level that corresponds to the entered percentage reduction from baseline. It provides a measurable endpoint for planning.

The average annual reduction is a straight-line planning value. It does not model compounding, production growth, acquisitions, divestitures, or a specific science-based target methodology.

Given: A company starts from 50,000 tCO2e and sets a 40% absolute reduction target over eight years.

Calculation: Total reduction required = 50,000 × 0.40 = 20,000 tCO2e. Target emissions = 50,000 − 20,000 = 30,000 tCO2e. Average annual reduction = 20,000 ÷ 8 = 2,500 tCO2e per year.

Result: The endpoint is 30,000 tCO2e, with a simple planning pace of 2,500 tCO2e of reduction per year.

Is the target percentage applied every year?

No. It is applied once to the baseline to calculate the final target level. The annual figure is only the total required reduction divided by the time horizon.

Can I use an intensity target?

This calculator is built for an absolute emissions target. For an intensity target, first forecast the activity denominator and convert the desired intensity into a corresponding absolute emissions level.

What happens if the target is 100%?

The target emissions level becomes zero, and the total reduction required equals the full baseline. That mathematical result does not determine whether zero emissions is technically or operationally feasible.

Should offsets count toward the reduction target?

That depends on the target framework or internal policy. This calculator treats the entered percentage as an emissions reduction and does not automatically subtract offsets.

How should I use the annual reduction number?

Use it as a simple benchmark for the average pace needed. A real plan may front-load or back-load reductions depending on project timing and capital cycles.
