Cloud Backup Utilization Rate Estimator

1. Enter used capacity
Use a consistent workload measure, such as licensed units, ingest capacity, retained data capacity, or another internal capacity unit.

2. Enter provisioned capacity
Use the total amount currently available under the same unit definition as used capacity.

3. Set a target utilization
Choose the operating target your team uses for planning headroom.

4. Read the utilization result
The primary result is used capacity divided by provisioned capacity.

5. Review right-sizing context
Use the capacity-at-target figure to estimate how much provisioned capacity would be needed for current usage at the target rate.

Utilization rate = Used capacity ÷ Provisioned capacity × 100

Unused capacity = Provisioned capacity − Used capacity. Capacity needed at target = Used capacity ÷ (Target utilization ÷ 100). All capacity inputs must use the same unit. The calculator is a point-in-time utilization view and does not model peak bursts or future growth.

What the result means

The utilization rate shows the share of provisioned capacity currently consumed by the measured workload.

Interpret the result alongside peak demand, resilience requirements, and the cost of running too close to capacity limits.

Given: Used capacity = 72 units; provisioned capacity = 100 units; target utilization = 80%.

Calculation: Utilization = 72 ÷ 100 × 100 = 72%. Unused capacity = 28 units. Capacity at an 80% target = 72 ÷ 0.80 = 90 units.

Result: Current utilization is 72%, which is 8 percentage points below the target.
