Composting Storage Capacity Estimator

The Composting Storage Capacity Estimator estimates how much physical volume is needed to hold incoming organics before active processing. It combines average daily tonnage, the loose bulk volume occupied by each ton, expected holding time, and a capacity margin so the result reflects both routine inventory and operating variability. This estimate is useful when sizing bins, bunkers, covered bays, roll-off containers, or staging areas for a composting operation. Bulk density can change substantially with material mix, compaction, moisture, and container geometry, so a site-specific volume-per-ton value gives the most useful result. The main result is a planning volume in cubic yards, with the underlying daily volume and contingency shown separately. It is intended for preliminary capacity checks rather than structural or permitting design.

1. Enter average daily input
Use the typical tons of organic feedstock received on an operating day.

2. Set bulk volume per ton
Enter the loose cubic yards occupied by one ton under the way the material is actually stored. Use measured container or pile data when available.

3. Choose storage duration
Enter the number of days material is expected to remain in the storage area before processing or shipment.

4. Add a contingency margin
Use the percentage field to provide room for uneven deliveries, delayed processing, or other normal variation.

5. Review required volume
The result shows total cubic yards after contingency, plus the base storage volume and average daily bulk volume.

Daily bulk volume = Daily input × Bulk volume per ton Base storage = Daily bulk volume × Storage days Required capacity = Base storage × (1 + Contingency % / 100)

Daily input is in tons/day, bulk volume is in cubic yards per ton, and storage days is in days. Multiplying these values gives cubic yards. The contingency percentage is applied only after the base holding volume is calculated.

What the result means

The result is the estimated usable volume needed to hold the specified material inventory under the stated operating assumptions.

Actual facilities may need additional clearances, access aisles, freeboard, fire separation, stormwater controls, or equipment maneuvering space that are not included here.

Given: 18 tons/day, 2.2 yd³/ton, 5 storage days, and 20% contingency.

Calculation:
Daily bulk volume = 18 × 2.2 = 39.6 yd³/day.
Base storage = 39.6 × 5 = 198.0 yd³.
Required capacity = 198.0 × 1.20 = 237.6 yd³.

Result: Plan for about 237.6 yd³ of usable storage volume.

Interpretation: This volume covers the stated holding period plus the selected operating margin; circulation and code-required space would be added separately.

Why does bulk volume per ton matter?

A ton of loose material can occupy very different volumes depending on composition, moisture, particle size, and compaction. The estimator therefore needs a volume-per-ton value rather than assuming a universal density.

Should storage days include weekends or shutdowns?

Include any days when incoming material can accumulate without leaving the storage area. If deliveries stop during a shutdown, use the actual accumulation period rather than the calendar duration.

Is the contingency the same as freeboard?

Not necessarily. The contingency is a general planning allowance for variable inventory; required freeboard or other safety clearances may need to be added separately.

Can I use container capacity labels as the volume-per-ton input?

Use container volume to derive a measured ratio only if you also know the typical material weight in that container. Nominal container size by itself does not reveal how many cubic yards one ton occupies.

How should I use this result for layout planning?

Treat the calculated volume as storage capacity, then convert it into the number and dimensions of bins, bays, or containers. Add access, loading, equipment, and regulatory space outside the calculation.
