A crane’s actual allowable load depends on configuration, boom length and angle, operating radius, counterweight, reeving, ground conditions, attachments, and manufacturer instructions. Those factors cannot be represented by one generic percentage. Enter only a capacity value that is already appropriate to the intended configuration, and use the planning factor as an additional internal margin—not as a way to establish safe lifting capacity. Final lift decisions must follow the manufacturer’s load chart and qualified site procedures.

Rated capacity — capacity value entered for the specific crane configuration.

Planning factor — user-selected percentage applied to that rated value.

Planned load — load being screened, in the same unit as rated capacity.

Planning utilization — share of the adjusted planning capacity used by the planned load.

Assumptions: This is a screening calculation only. It assumes the entered rated capacity is already valid for the exact crane setup and operating radius; the calculator does not determine a safe working load.

What the result means

Use the result as a planning or performance estimate based on the values you entered. Interpret it alongside site conditions, scope definition, and any applicable project controls.

This calculator is for estimating and planning only. Verify project-specific engineering, safety, manufacturer, contractual, and regulatory requirements independently where applicable.

Given: A configuration-specific rated capacity of 42 tons, an 80% planning factor, and a planned load of 28 tons.

Calculation: Planning capacity = 42 × 0.80 = 33.6 tons. Planning utilization = 28 ÷ 33.6 × 100 = 83.33%. Remaining planning margin = 33.6 − 28 = 5.6 tons.

Result: 33.6 tons of planning capacity with 83.3% planning utilization.

Interpretation: The load fits within this user-defined planning threshold, but that result does not establish that the lift is safe or permitted.

Is the planning factor a safety factor?

No. It is only a user-entered planning margin applied to an already applicable rated-capacity value. Safety requirements must come from the manufacturer, regulations, and the site lift plan.

Can I enter the crane’s maximum nameplate capacity?

Only if that value is actually applicable to the intended configuration and radius. Maximum advertised capacity is often not the capacity available for a specific lift.

What does utilization above 100% mean?

The planned load exceeds the adjusted planning capacity you entered. It is a clear signal to stop the screening exercise and review the load, configuration, and approved lift data.

Should rigging weight be included?

Use the load definition required by your lift-planning procedure and manufacturer information. In many real lift calculations, hook blocks, rigging, attachments, or other deductions can matter.

Can this calculator approve a crane lift?

No. It does not model the load chart, operating radius, boom configuration, ground conditions, dynamic effects, or site controls, so it cannot approve or certify a lift.
