Given:

  • Planned work quantity = 5,000 work units
  • Material per work unit = 2.4 material units
  • Waste allowance = 7%

Calculation:
Base material = 5,000 × 2.4 = 12,000 material units. Waste quantity = 12,000 × 0.07 = 840. Total = 12,000 + 840 = 12,840. Effective material factor = 2.4 × 1.07 = 2.568 material units per work unit.

Result: 12,840 material units.

The activity needs 12,000 units theoretically, plus an 840-unit allowance for the entered 7% waste rate.

Should the material rate already include waste?

Preferably no. Enter a net consumption factor and apply waste separately so the allowance is visible. If your rate already contains waste, set the waste field to zero to avoid double counting.

Can the work quantity and material quantity use different units?

Yes, as long as the material-per-work-unit factor correctly connects them. For example, gallons per square foot is valid if the work quantity is entered in square feet.

Why is waste added as a percentage of base material?

This model treats waste as an estimating allowance on theoretical consumption. Some materials may use a yield-loss method instead, especially when loss is defined as a percentage of purchased quantity.

Does the result account for package sizes?

No. The total is a continuous estimated quantity. Round to bags, pallets, truckloads, rolls, or other purchase units after applying supplier-specific packaging.

How is this different from a waste allowance estimator?
