Use herd totals from the same time period and on consistent weight bases. What the result means

Why use dry matter intake instead of as-fed weight?

Dry matter removes the effect of feed moisture and creates a more consistent basis for comparing feed consumed with milk produced.

What does a lower feed conversion ratio mean here?

It means fewer pounds of dry matter were consumed per pound of milk produced. Interpretation should still consider milk components, body condition, health, and stage of lactation.

Why is milk feed efficiency also shown?

Dairy operations often express the relationship as pounds of milk per pound of dry matter intake. It is the reciprocal of the feed-conversion ratio and may be more familiar for herd benchmarking.

Can I compare fresh cows with late-lactation cows directly?

The arithmetic is valid, but biological context differs. Comparisons are more useful for similar groups or when stage of lactation and body-weight change are considered.

Should milk be entered in gallons?

No. Enter milk as weight in pounds so it is directly comparable with dry matter intake by weight. Convert any volume measurement to milk weight before using the calculator.
