Here, x is the observed success count, n is the sample size, and z is the critical value for the selected confidence level. The page uses the familiar normal approximation and clips displayed bounds to 0%–100%.
The main result is the observed proportion. The interval shows a range of values that is compatible with the sample under the selected normal-approximation confidence level.
For small samples or proportions very close to 0% or 100%, an exact or Wilson interval may be preferable.
Given: 420 successes from 600 observations at 95% confidence.
Calculation: p = 420 / 600 = 0.70. SE = √(0.70 × 0.30 / 600) = 0.01871. Margin = 1.96 × 0.01871 = 0.03667.
Result: 70.00%, with an approximate 95% interval from 66.33% to 73.67%.
Interpretation: The sample rate is 70%, while the interval communicates the sampling uncertainty around that estimate.
Smaller samples produce larger standard errors, so the same confidence level yields a wider range.
