Desalination Storage Capacity Estimator

The Desalination Storage Capacity Estimator sizes nominal product-water storage from daily desalinated-water output, autonomy days, a demand or production peak factor, and the usable fraction of the tank. It is intended for preliminary planning where storage must bridge desalination production schedules and downstream water demand.

Desalination plants often benefit from storage because membrane trains and thermal units may operate more steadily than distribution demand. The calculator therefore starts with the product-water volume that must be covered, adds the selected autonomy and peak allowance, then increases nominal tank size when only part of the tank can be used. The result is not a substitute for detailed reservoir design, which may also need emergency supply, fire reserve, water-age, disinfection, pressure-zone, seismic, and site-specific requirements.

Why might desalination need product-water storage?

Storage can decouple relatively steady plant production from variable customer demand, maintenance windows, and distribution operations.

Should brine volume be included in this tank size?

No. This estimator is for desalinated product-water storage. Brine or concentrate handling requires separate storage and discharge design.

Can autonomy be less than one day?

Yes. Fractional days are appropriate when storage is intended to cover only several hours rather than a full-day outage.

What does usable storage mean here?

It is the portion of nominal tank volume available between normal operating limits. Dead storage, freeboard, and other unavailable volume reduce the usable fraction.

Does this replace a reservoir design study?

No. It is a screening calculation; final design should address hydraulic, water-quality, structural, operational, and applicable regulatory requirements.
