Dog Food Break-Even Price Estimator

The Dog Food Break-Even Price Estimator compares two dry foods on feeding cost rather than sticker price alone. It calculates the current food’s cost per day from its bag price, bag size, estimated cups per pound, and daily serving. Then it determines the alternative bag price that would produce the same daily cost at the alternative food’s serving size and package characteristics.

This is useful when a denser food requires fewer cups per day or when two brands sell different bag sizes. A higher-priced alternative can still break even if each bag provides more feeding days. The result is a purchasing threshold, not a nutrition comparison: ingredient quality, suitability, digestibility, veterinary needs, waste, taxes, shipping, and promotional pricing are outside the calculation.

1. Describe the current food
Enter the price, bag weight, cups per pound, and average cups fed each day.

2. Describe the alternative package
Enter the alternative bag weight and its approximate cups per pound.

The comparison assumes each daily portion is already appropriate for its respective food.

What the result means

The main result is the alternative bag price that makes modeled daily feeding cost equal to the current food’s daily cost.

Use product-specific serving and density information. Cost equivalence does not mean the foods are nutritionally equivalent or equally appropriate for a particular dog.

Given: Current food costs $62 for 24 lb, has 4 cups/lb, and is fed at 2.5 cups/day. The alternative is 22 lb, 4.2 cups/lb, and is fed at 2.2 cups/day.

Calculation: Current days per bag = 24 × 4 ÷ 2.5 = 38.4 days. Current daily cost = $62 ÷ 38.4 = $1.6146. Alternative days per bag = 22 × 4.2 ÷ 2.2 = 42 days. Break-even price = $1.6146 × 42 = $67.81.

Result: About $67.81 per alternative bag.

Interpretation: Under these serving assumptions, an alternative price below $67.81 lowers daily food cost relative to the current food.

Why not just compare price per pound?

Price per pound ignores how much of each food is fed daily. This calculator incorporates the daily serving and estimated cups per pound.

Where should alternative daily cups come from?

Use the serving amount appropriate for the alternative food and your dog, based on the feeding plan you follow. Do not copy the current food’s cup amount automatically.

What if the alternative bag is smaller?

Bag size is built into the days-per-bag calculation, so the break-even price adjusts for a smaller or larger package.

Can I use sale prices?

Yes. Enter the actual current price you want to compare against. Remember that a temporary sale may not represent long-term cost.

Does a lower break-even cost mean the alternative is better?

No. The result only compares modeled feeding cost. Nutritional suitability and health considerations require separate evaluation.
