Electric Delivery Van Range Loss Estimator

This estimator projects how operating conditions may reduce the usable driving range of an electric delivery van duty cycle. It starts with the vehicle's rated or normal-condition range, then applies separate percentage losses for temperature, sustained speed, payload, HVAC use, and other route factors.

The result helps drivers and dispatchers create a more conservative range budget before departure. The loss inputs are scenario assumptions rather than universal constants; actual energy use depends on vehicle aerodynamics, tires, elevation, wind, traffic, battery temperature, and driver behavior.

What the result means

Usable range is the estimated distance available while preserving the selected arrival reserve.

Avoid double-counting effects already embedded in the baseline range, such as normal HVAC use or typical payload.

Given: 180-mile baseline range, 9% temperature loss, 2% speed loss, 11% payload loss, 5% HVAC loss, 4% stop-and-go or route loss, and a 15% reserve.

Calculation: Combined operating loss = 31%. Adjusted range = 180 × 0.69 = 124.2 miles. Reserve = 124.2 × 15% = 18.63 miles. Usable range = 105.57 miles.

Result: The van has an estimated 105.6 usable miles while retaining the selected reserve.

Should I enter EPA range or my usual observed range?

Use the baseline that best matches your planning purpose. Observed range is often more practical when it already reflects tires, vehicle age, and normal driving.

Are the loss percentages compounded?

No. This model adds them for clarity. If you have a more detailed energy model, use its combined loss as a single input and leave overlapping fields at zero.

How should elevation and headwind be represented?

Place them in Other route loss unless they are already included in your speed estimate.

What is the difference between adjusted range and usable range?

Adjusted range reflects operating losses. Usable range subtracts the arrival reserve you want to preserve.

Can the result guarantee arrival range?

No. It is a planning estimate. Monitor live vehicle consumption and charging options during operation.
