EV Tire Range Loss Estimator

This estimator translates an EV tire efficiency penalty into expected range loss. It compares a reference range with the reduced range associated with higher rolling resistance, aerodynamic drag, wheel mass, or underinflation.

Drivers can use the result to evaluate seasonal tires, wheel changes, or pressure issues before a trip. The output isolates the tire-related assumption and does not include weather, HVAC use, payload, or elevation.

What the result means

The headline is the distance available after both the tire penalty and the selected arrival reserve are applied.

Actual range also depends on temperature, speed, wind, road surface, HVAC use, payload, and battery condition.

Given: 300-mile baseline range, 6% tire penalty, and 10% arrival reserve.

Calculation: Adjusted full range = 300 × 0.94 = 282 miles. Usable adjusted range = 282 × 0.90 = 253.8 miles. Range loss = 300 − 282 = 18 miles.

Result: Plan around 254 usable miles while preserving a 10% reserve.

Where can I get a tire penalty estimate?

Use controlled before-and-after energy consumption data when available. Manufacturer tests and independent comparisons can also provide a starting range.

Does tire pressure belong in the penalty?

Yes. If low pressure has already reduced efficiency, include that effect in the percentage entered.

Why is reserve applied after the tire penalty?

The reserve is a share of the reduced full-range estimate, matching the selected operating setup.

Will larger wheels always reduce range?

Not always, but added mass, wider tread, and less aerodynamic wheel designs often increase energy use.
