Exam GPA Calculator

The Exam GPA Calculator converts a set of exam grades into a weighted grade-point average. Each exam can contribute according to its credit or weight, which makes the result more meaningful than a simple average when assessments have different importance.

Enter up to four exam percentages, their weights, and the GPA scale maximum. The calculator maps each percentage to a standard grade-point band, computes the weighted GPA, and reports the weighted exam percentage for comparison. The mapping is an estimate and should be replaced by your institution’s official conversion when it differs.

1. Enter exam percentages
Add the percentage earned on each exam.

2. Assign exam weights
Use credits, category weights, or relative importance values. Only the proportions matter.

3. Choose the GPA scale
Enter 4.0 or another maximum used by your program.

4. Review weighted GPA
The main result applies the entered weights to grade-point bands.

5. Compare the percentage
Use the weighted percentage to check how the GPA conversion compresses scores into bands.

Weighted GPA = Σ(Exam grade-point ratio × Exam weight) ÷ Σ weights × GPA scale maximum

This calculator uses grade-point ratios of 1.00 for 90–100%, 0.75 for 80–89.99%, 0.50 for 70–79.99%, 0.25 for 60–69.99%, and 0 for below 60%. The weighted percentage is calculated separately as Σ(percentage × weight) ÷ Σ weights.

What the result means

The GPA result summarizes exam performance after converting percentage bands to the selected GPA scale.

Institutional GPA conversions vary; use the weighted percentage as the more portable result.

Given: Exam grades of 88%, 92%, 79%, and 85%, each with weight 1, on a 4.0 scale.

Calculation: Grade-point ratios are 0.75, 1.00, 0.50, and 0.75. Average ratio = (0.75 + 1.00 + 0.50 + 0.75) ÷ 4 = 0.75. GPA = 0.75 × 4.0 = 3.00. Weighted percentage = (88 + 92 + 79 + 85) ÷ 4 = 86%.

Result: The estimated exam GPA is 3.00/4.0, with an 86% weighted exam average.

Is this the same as my cumulative GPA?

No. It summarizes only the exams entered and does not include other courses or assignments.

Can I enter percentage weights such as 20 and 30?

Yes. Any positive relative weights work because the calculator divides by their total.

Why can two similar percentages produce different GPA points?

Band conversion groups a range of percentages into one grade-point value, so scores near a cutoff may change abruptly.

Can I use a 5.0 scale?

Yes. Enter 5 as the scale maximum, but confirm that the same band mapping is appropriate for your institution.

What if my school uses letter grades first?

Convert each exam to the official grade points supplied by the school; this page’s percentage mapping is only a general estimate.
