Family Cost Estimator

Estimate a family’s broad monthly cost of living by combining fixed expenses, food, childcare, education, health, transportation, and discretionary spending. It provides a single planning total plus cost per household member.

Families can use the estimate when evaluating income needs, a move, or a major lifestyle change. The result is only as complete as the categories entered and should be supplemented with irregular annual costs when those are material.

Formula:

Monthly family cost = fixed costs + food + childcare and education + health and insurance + transportation + other family spending. Cost per person = monthly family cost ÷ family members.

What the result means

Estimated monthly family cost is the central planning estimate produced from the values you enter.

For a more conservative plan, convert annual expenses such as school fees or vehicle registration into monthly amounts and add them to Other.

Given: 4 members, $3,000 fixed costs, $1,100 food, $1,200 childcare, $700 health, $800 transportation, and $500 other spending.

Calculation: Monthly cost = $7,300. Annual cost = $87,600. Cost per person = $7,300 ÷ 4 = $1,825 per month.

Result: The family’s estimated living cost is $7,300 per month, before any unentered irregular expenses.

Is this the same as a family budget?

It is a high-level cost estimate. A full budget also tracks income, savings, debt goals, and irregular cash flows.

How should annual expenses be included?

Convert each expected annual expense to a monthly amount and add it to Other.

What does cost per person mean?

It divides total family cost equally for comparison only; actual spending is rarely equal across members.

Can I compare two locations?

Yes. Enter the expected monthly costs for each location separately and compare totals and fixed-cost shares.

What important costs are easy to miss?

Maintenance, school activities, medical out-of-pocket costs, gifts, travel, and replacement purchases are commonly omitted.
