It combines storage capacity, equivalent cycling, usable capacity, conversion efficiency, and operating availability, making it useful for storage developers and operators estimating useful energy delivered over a year. The result represents delivered electric energy rather than charging input.

Equivalent full cycles let partial charge-and-discharge events be combined into a comparable annual throughput. For example, two half-depth cycles equal one full cycle. The estimate is useful for early production forecasts, operating plans, and comparisons between storage concepts. Actual dispatch varies with demand, charging energy, ambient conditions, control limits, maintenance, and degradation, so measured interval data should replace planning assumptions when it becomes available.

Percentages are divided by 100 before multiplication. Output is expressed in MWh per year. The method assumes the entered equivalent cycles already summarize the dispatch pattern and applies one average efficiency and availability factor.

What the result means

The annual output is the estimated MWh available to the load or grid after the selected operating limits and losses. It is an energy total, not a power rating.

Do not interpret the result as guaranteed production. Charging constraints, standby losses, seasonal conditions, auxiliary loads, and degradation can change delivered output.

What counts as an equivalent full cycle?

It is cumulative discharged energy equal to one full use of nominal capacity. Several partial cycles can add up to one equivalent full cycle.

Why include depth of discharge separately from efficiency?

Depth of discharge limits how much stored energy is intentionally accessed; efficiency accounts for energy lost during storage and delivery. They represent different effects and should not be combined.

Should availability reduce the number of cycles instead?

Either approach can work if applied consistently. This calculator keeps planned equivalent cycles and applies availability separately, so do not already derate the cycle count for the same outages.

Can annual output exceed nominal capacity?

Yes. Capacity is the energy held at one time, while annual output accumulates energy across many cycles.

Is the result AC energy delivered to the grid?

It represents useful delivered electric energy under the entered efficiency definition. Check equipment documentation so the capacity and efficiency values use compatible boundaries.
