Home Energy Calculator

Estimate household energy use and cost from electricity, natural gas, and other monthly energy charges. The calculator combines usage-based charges and fixed fees, then reports annual cost and electricity cost per kilowatt-hour.

It is designed for bill review, budgeting, and simple before-and-after comparisons when considering efficiency changes. Actual utility bills may also include tiered rates, taxes, demand charges, seasonal pricing, or credits not represented by this simplified model.

Formula:

Monthly energy cost = electricity use × electricity rate + gas cost + other energy charges + fixed fees. Annual energy cost = monthly energy cost × 12.

What the result means

Estimated monthly energy cost is the central planning estimate produced from the values you enter.

Use the all-in electricity rate from your bill when possible; otherwise taxes and riders may be understated.

Given: 900 kWh per month at $0.16 per kWh, $70 gas, $25 other energy charges, and $18 fixed fees.

Calculation: Electricity = 900 × $0.16 = $144. Monthly total = $144 + $70 + $25 + $18 = $257. Annual cost = $3,084.

Result: Estimated household energy spending is $257 per month, or about $8.45 per day.

Where can I find the electricity rate?

Divide the bill’s electricity charges by billed kWh, or use the published all-in rate when available.

Can I enter propane or heating oil?

Yes. Add its average monthly cost under other energy charges or gas cost.

Does the calculator support tiered pricing?

Not directly. Use an effective average rate based on a recent bill.

Why is my bill higher than the estimate?

Taxes, riders, minimum charges, demand fees, and seasonal rate changes may not be fully represented.

Can this measure energy savings?

Run the calculator with current usage and again with projected lower usage, then compare the monthly totals.
