Adjusted reading time = Base reading time × Difficulty and notes factor
Pages per day = Pages assigned ÷ Days available
Hours per day = Adjusted reading time ÷ Days available

What the result means

The main result estimates total hours after allowing for the selected difficulty or note-taking factor. Daily figures divide the workload evenly across the available days.

Breaks, interruptions, prior knowledge, and different page densities are not modeled separately.

Given

A student has 120 pages, reads 24 pages per hour, uses a 1.25 factor for notes, and has four days.

Calculation

Base time = 120 ÷ 24 = 5.00 hours. Adjusted time = 5.00 × 1.25 = 6.25 hours. Pages per day = 120 ÷ 4 = 30. Hours per day = 6.25 ÷ 4 = 1.5625 hours.

Result

The plan is 30 pages and about 1.56 hours per day, for an estimated total of 6.25 hours.

How do I estimate my reading speed?

Time a representative section for 15–30 minutes, count the pages completed, and convert that pace to pages per hour.

What factor should I use for difficult material?

Use 1.0 for straight reading. A value above 1.0 adds time for complexity, notes, or rereading; test your own pace rather than relying on a universal factor.

Does the calculator include breaks?

Only if you reflect them in the factor. For example, a larger factor can provide a practical buffer.

Can I plan uneven daily workloads?

The displayed daily plan is even. You can use it as an average and shift pages between days while keeping the same total.

Why can page-based estimates vary so much?

Page density, diagrams, formulas, unfamiliar vocabulary, and reading purpose can all change the time required.
