Extensive preparation, trim detail, room contents, access, drying intervals, and color changes may require additional time.

Given: 1,800 sq ft, productivity of 120 sq ft per worker-hour, a 2-person crew, and 3 setup/cleanup hours.

Calculation: Production labor = 1,800 ÷ 120 = 15 hours. Setup labor = 3 × 2 = 6 hours. Total labor = 21 labor-hours. Crew duration = 15 ÷ 2 + 3 = 10.5 hours.

Result: About 21 labor-hours and 10.5 elapsed crew-hours.

This provides a baseline before adding unusual prep or access work.

Should preparation time be included in productivity or setup?

Routine prep can be embedded in the productivity rate if that is how you measured it. Large repairs or special masking are often clearer as separate labor additions.

Does the number of coats affect this calculator?

Not directly. If your productivity rate is per completed project area including all planned coats, enter the area once. If the rate is per coat, use total coated area instead.

Why might a second painter not cut the duration in half?

The mathematical model assumes work divides evenly, but real rooms can limit how many people work efficiently at once. Coordination and task dependencies can reduce scaling.

Can I use this for trim and doors?

Only if you can express those tasks with a meaningful area-based productivity rate. Detailed trim and doors are often better estimated with unit-based or separate time allowances.

How do I turn labor-hours into labor cost?
