Leak Detection Recovery Rate Estimator

This estimator calculates a leak recovery rate by comparing the portion of detected or estimated leak volume that is captured, reused, or otherwise recovered with the total leak volume identified. It is useful for industrial water systems, process facilities, and sites that actively collect leakage instead of allowing all of it to become waste or discharge. The result is expressed as a percentage and is accompanied by the unrecovered volume.

Recovery rate is a simple mass-balance indicator, so the quality of the result depends on using volumes measured over the same event or reporting period. It should not be confused with leak detection accuracy or the percentage of leaks repaired. A high recovery percentage means more of the identified leak volume was retained for beneficial use or controlled handling, but it does not by itself show whether leakage was minimized in the first place.

Recovery rate = Recovered leak volume ÷ Detected leak volume × 100%
Unrecovered volume = Detected leak volume − Recovered leak volume

Both volume inputs must use the same unit and reporting period. This page displays gallons, but the percentage formula works with any consistent volume unit.

The recovered volume cannot exceed the detected leak volume in this simple balance. If accounting boundaries differ, reconcile the measurements before using the percentage.

What the result means

The percentage shows how much of the identified leak volume was recovered rather than left unrecovered.

Use the metric alongside total leak volume; a high recovery rate can still accompany substantial leakage.

Given: 24,000 gallons of detected leakage and 18,600 gallons captured for reuse.

Calculation: Recovery rate = 18,600 ÷ 24,000 × 100 = 77.5%. Unrecovered volume = 24,000 − 18,600 = 5,400 gal.

Result: The recovery rate is 77.5%, with 5,400 gallons unrecovered.

Is recovery rate the same as leak reduction?

No. Recovery rate measures what happens to leak volume after it occurs. Leak reduction measures whether leakage itself is prevented or reduced.

Can I use liters instead of gallons?

The ratio works with any consistent volume unit, but the page labels are gallons. Convert both inputs to gallons for consistent display.

Why can recovered volume not exceed detected volume?

This calculator uses a closed balance in which recovered water is a subset of detected leakage. A larger recovered value indicates mismatched measurement boundaries or periods.

Should I calculate one event or a whole year?

Either is valid if both inputs cover the same period. Annual values are useful for program reporting, while event-level values can help diagnose individual responses.

How should I interpret a high percentage?

It means a large share of identified leakage was recovered. It does not prove the site has a low leak rate or efficient detection program.
