Learning Program Productivity Loss Estimator

The Learning Program Productivity Loss Estimator calculates the compensation value of productive work time displaced by employee participation in training. It multiplies the number of learners by training hours, average hourly compensation cost, and the share of training time that would otherwise have been productive. This distinction lets you model programs that occur entirely during work hours, partly during low-demand periods, or mostly outside scheduled productive time.

The estimate can be used alongside direct program costs to build a fuller view of learning investment. It is especially helpful when comparing program lengths or delivery formats with different time demands. The result should be treated as opportunity cost rather than a cash expense unless training time directly causes paid overtime, contractor coverage, or another incremental outlay.

Why is there a displacement percentage?

Not every training hour necessarily replaces productive work. Some learning occurs during planned development time, slack periods, or outside normal work, so the percentage lets you reflect that difference.

Should breaks be included in training hours?

Include only time you consider part of the employee time commitment for the program. Use the same rule across scenarios you plan to compare.

Can I use fully loaded labor cost?

Yes. If you want the opportunity cost to include benefits, payroll taxes, and other employer costs, use a fully loaded hourly compensation figure.

Does this mean training is a loss?

No. The calculator measures the short-term opportunity cost of time spent learning; it does not subtract future productivity, quality, promotion, or retention benefits.

How is this different from yearly program cost?

Yearly program cost focuses on direct operating expenses such as licenses and instructors. This estimator values employee productive time displaced by participation.
