The Line Haul Per-Shipment Cost Estimator estimates an average transportation cost per shipment by allocating the entered movement-level charges across the shipment count. It gives planners a compact unit-cost view while still showing the main cost components behind the result. Use the estimate for scenario comparisons, preliminary budgeting, load-consolidation decisions, or checking how a change in distance, fees, or shipment count affects average economics. Enter costs from the same movement and currency so the allocation remains internally consistent. The result includes only the cost categories represented by the inputs. Accessorials, taxes, duties, insurance, downstream handling, detention, storage, and other charges can materially change actual landed or fully burdened cost when they are outside this model.

Which currency does the calculator use?

The page displays dollars, but the arithmetic is currency-agnostic if every monetary input uses the same currency. Do not mix currencies without converting them first.

Why does cost per shipment fall when shipment count rises?

Fixed and movement-level costs are spread across more shipments, so the average allocation per shipment decreases. Variable per-shipment charges can limit how much that average falls.

Should I include taxes and duties?

Only if you intentionally want them inside this unit-cost estimate and can enter them in one of the modeled cost fields. Otherwise treat the result as a transport-cost estimate rather than a complete landed-cost calculation.

What if I enter zero shipments?

The calculator requires a shipment count greater than zero because a per-shipment cost cannot be calculated without a denominator.

How should I compare two freight options?

Use the same cost scope in both scenarios. If one quote includes terminal, fuel, or handling charges that the other excludes, normalize those components before comparing the calculated unit costs.
