The Object Storage Unit Cost Estimator calculates storage spend per unit of stored data, typically per GiB-month or TiB-month, using your own total cost and average stored volume. It helps engineering, FinOps, backup, media, and data-platform teams normalize object storage cost so changes in data volume can be separated from changes in storage economics.

Enter the total object storage cost for a period and the average amount of data stored during that same period. The calculator can report the result per GiB or per TiB by using a conversion factor. Why use average stored data instead of the month-end amount?

Storage bills accumulate over time, so an average volume usually matches the cost period better than a single ending snapshot when capacity changes during the month.

Does 1,024 GiB equal one TiB?

Yes. One tebibyte (TiB) equals 1,024 gibibytes (GiB). Some provider pricing pages may use decimal GB or TB instead, so keep units consistent.

Should request and retrieval fees be included?

Include them if you want a blended all-in storage unit cost. Exclude them if you specifically want a capacity-only metric.

Can I compare storage classes with this result?

Yes, if the cost and stored-volume inputs are measured consistently. Remember that different classes may have retrieval charges, minimum durations, or access patterns that affect the total cost scope.

How is this different from a capacity needs estimator?

Unit cost measures spend per stored-data unit. Capacity needs estimates how much storage must be provisioned in the future after growth, retention, and headroom assumptions.
