The Pet Energy Calculator estimates electricity use and cost for pet-related equipment such as aquarium filters, habitat heaters, heat lamps, pumps, fountains, automatic feeders, cameras, air cleaners, and climate-control devices. It combines device wattage, daily operating time, quantity, electricity rate, and standby consumption.

The output helps identify which devices drive recurring energy costs and supports comparisons between equipment options. It estimates household electricity only; it does not calculate an animal’s dietary calorie needs or medical energy requirements.

1. Find device wattage
Use the rated or measured active power for one device.

2. Enter operating time
Use average active hours per day, between zero and 24.

3. Set device quantity
Enter how many identical devices follow the same schedule.

4. Add standby power
Enter power used during the remaining daily hours, or zero if fully disconnected.

5. Enter the electricity rate
Use the energy charge per kilowatt-hour from your bill.

6. Choose the billing period
Set the number of days represented by the estimate.

Daily active energy = Watts × Active hours × Devices ÷ 1,000
Daily standby energy = Standby watts × (24 − Active hours) × Devices ÷ 1,000
Period cost = (Daily active energy + Daily standby energy) × Days × Electricity rate

What the result means

The result is the estimated electricity charge attributable to the entered equipment during the chosen period.

Utility bills can include fixed fees, time-of-use pricing, taxes, and tiered rates not represented by one flat energy rate.

Given: Two 40 W devices operating 10 hours daily, 3 W standby power, $0.20/kWh, and 30 days.

Calculation: Active = 40 × 10 × 2 ÷ 1,000 = 0.8 kWh/day. Standby = 3 × 14 × 2 ÷ 1,000 = 0.084 kWh/day. Cost = 0.884 × 30 × $0.20 = $5.30.

Result: Estimated 30-day energy use is 26.52 kWh costing about $5.30.

Where can I find device wattage?

Check the label, manual, manufacturer specifications, or a plug-in power meter. Measured consumption is usually more representative than a maximum rating.

How do I calculate several different devices?

Run each device type separately and add the period kWh and costs.

What should I enter for equipment that cycles on and off?

Use average active hours or measured average wattage over a full day.

Does the result include heating or cooling for the whole home?

Only if you intentionally allocate and enter that equipment. Shared household climate-control use is difficult to attribute to pets precisely.

Why might the bill impact differ?

Time-of-use rates, fixed charges, taxes, tiered pricing, and seasonal device behavior can change actual cost.
