Predictive Maintenance Cycle Time Estimator

The Predictive Maintenance Cycle Time Estimator calculates the average elapsed maintenance time per completed task from a total time and completed-task count. It gives reliability teams using condition-based maintenance a simple baseline for understanding how long a typical predictive maintenance intervention consumes within a selected period.

Average cycle time can support crew planning, window sizing, and comparisons between similar task groups. It should not be treated as the duration of every individual job because equipment condition, access, troubleshooting, parts availability, and task scope can create substantial variation.

Average Cycle Time = Total Maintenance Time ÷ Completed Tasks

Total Maintenance Time is entered in minutes and Completed Tasks is a count. The main result is therefore minutes per task; the calculator also converts that value to hours per task.

The estimate is an arithmetic average. It assumes the entered time and task count describe the same group of completed work and does not separate active wrench time, waiting, travel, permits, or parts delays unless those are included in the total time.

What the result means

Use the result as an operating estimate for the specific period and definitions represented by the entered inputs.

Compare periods only when units, counting rules, and time definitions are consistent.

Given: 360 total maintenance minutes across 12 completed tasks.

Calculation: 360 ÷ 12 = 30 minutes per task. That is 30 ÷ 60 = 0.50 hour per task.

Result: Average cycle time is 30 minutes per task.

Interpretation: The average can be used as a planning baseline for similar work, while high-variability jobs may require separate task classes or percentiles.

Should travel and waiting time be included?

Include them if you want an end-to-end maintenance cycle time; exclude them if you want a narrower hands-on processing time. Use the same definition when comparing periods.

Why is average cycle time different from a specific work order duration?

The calculator divides total time across all completed tasks. Individual work orders can be much shorter or longer than the average.

Can I use hours instead of minutes?

This page expects total time in minutes. Convert hours to minutes first so the displayed cycle-time units remain consistent.

What happens if no tasks were completed?

An average per completed task cannot be calculated with a zero task count. Use a period containing at least one completed task.

How does cycle time differ from takt time?

Cycle time reflects the average time actually consumed per completed task. Takt time is the available time per required task needed to satisfy demand or a schedule.
