1. Choose a representative text

2. Record the word count

Given:

  • Words read: 1,440
  • Elapsed time: 7 minutes 12 seconds
  • Target text: 2,500 words

Calculation:
Elapsed minutes = 7 + 12 ÷ 60 = 7.2. Speed = 1,440 ÷ 7.2 = 200 WPM. Projected time = 2,500 ÷ 200 = 12.5 minutes.

Result: 200 WPM; 12 minutes 30 seconds for the target

Interpretation: At the measured pace, a 2,500-word text of similar difficulty would take about twelve and a half minutes.

Should titles and captions count as words?

Count whatever was included in the timed reading. The word count and timed material must cover the same content.

Can I use this for silent and oral reading?

Yes, but measure them separately. Speaking requirements usually make oral reading slower than silent reading.

Why does technical material produce a lower speed?

Dense vocabulary, formulas, and note-taking increase processing time. Compare sessions with similar reading purposes and difficulty.

Does a higher WPM always mean better reading?

No. Speed without adequate comprehension may not be useful. Pair the rate with a comprehension check when accuracy matters.

How is this different from a reading-time estimator?

This page measures a personal pace from a timed sample, then uses it for projection. A generic estimator usually assumes a preset average speed.
