Reverse Logistics Service Level Estimator

The Reverse Logistics Service Level Estimator calculates the percentage of completed return cases that met a defined service target, such as receipt within a promised window, inspection within a set number of hours, or disposition by an internal deadline. It gives reverse-logistics teams a simple attainment rate based on observed counts.

Because the target itself can vary by company, customer promise, product class, or return reason, the calculator does not impose a specific standard. Instead, it lets you apply the service definition already used in your operation. The result can be tracked over time, compared across facilities, or reviewed alongside utilization and backlog to show whether the returns process is consistently meeting its commitments.

1. Define the service target
Decide what counts as success before entering data—for example, inspection completed within 24 hours of receipt.

2. Enter cases meeting the target
Count only completed cases that satisfied that same target definition.

3. Enter total completed cases
Use the total number of eligible completed cases measured over the same period.

4. Review the attainment rate
The result shows the percentage meeting target and the breakdown shows both the missed count and missed percentage.

The numerator must be a subset of the denominator. Both counts should cover the same reporting period and eligibility rules.

What the result means

The result is the share of eligible completed reverse-logistics cases that met the service target you defined.

This is an attainment metric, not a universal benchmark. The meaning depends on the exact target, exclusions, and reporting rules used in your operation.

Given: 1,145 completed return cases in a month, of which 1,076 met the facility’s defined processing-time target.

Calculation: Service level = 1,076 / 1,145 × 100 = 93.97%. Cases missing target = 1,145 − 1,076 = 69. Miss rate = 69 / 1,145 × 100 = 6.03%.

Result: Reverse-logistics service level = 93.97%.

About 94 of every 100 eligible completed cases met the selected service definition during the month.

What service target should I use?

Use the target that governs the process you are measuring, such as a customer promise, an internal SLA, or a contract requirement. The calculator does not choose the target for you.

Should open returns be counted in total completed cases?

Normally no, if the metric is defined on completed cases. If your organization uses a different denominator, keep that rule consistent across reporting periods.

What happens if cases meeting target exceed total cases?

That input combination is invalid because the successful cases must be part of the total. The calculator flags it so the counts can be corrected.

Can different return types be combined?

They can be combined only if they share a meaningful service definition. Otherwise, segmenting by return type or service commitment can provide a clearer result.

Why track service level together with utilization?

Service level shows target attainment, while utilization shows capacity loading. Reviewing both helps distinguish a service problem caused by capacity pressure from one caused by process design or execution.
