Rowing Pace Training Load Calculator

This calculator uses the session-RPE method to turn rowing duration and perceived effort into one simple internal training-load number. It is useful for comparing how demanding different rowing sessions felt, even when distance or pace differs.

The optional distance input adds average pace context, while the load itself is calculated only from duration and RPE. The number is an arbitrary unit for within-athlete tracking and should not be compared as if it were a universal physiological score.

Use a consistent RPE scale and timing when rating sessions.

Training load (AU) = session duration (minutes) × session RPE
Average pace (sec/500m) = duration seconds × 500 ÷ distance meters

Average pace is shown only when distance is greater than zero.

What the result means

A larger session-RPE load means a longer and/or harder session by this simple internal-load method.

RPE is subjective. Rate sessions consistently to make trend comparisons more useful.

Given: 45 minutes, session RPE 6, distance 10,000 m.

Calculation: Load = 45 × 6 = 270 AU. Pace = (45 × 60) × 500 ÷ 10,000 = 135 sec/500m.

Result: 270 AU and an average pace of 2:15/500m.

What does AU mean?

AU means arbitrary units. The number is useful for tracking your own session load consistently rather than comparing directly with another athlete.

When should I rate session RPE?

Use one consistent routine, commonly shortly after the full session rather than rating only the hardest interval. Consistency improves trend usefulness.

Is distance required?

No. Entering zero distance is allowed; training load will still calculate, but average pace will not be shown.

Why can two sessions have the same load but different workouts?

Duration and RPE can combine to the same product even when pace, intervals, and distance differ. The method compresses workload into a single simple index.

Can I add daily loads to track a week?

Yes, if you apply the same method consistently. Weekly totals can help show trends, although they do not capture every aspect of fatigue or recovery.
