Semester Credit Calculator

The Semester Credit Calculator totals attempted and completed credits across a semester and shows the completion rate. It helps students check whether their current course load matches a credit target and how withdrawals, incompletes, or failed courses affect progress.

Credit systems and academic policies differ by institution, so the calculator treats the entered credit values as user-defined units. Use the completed-credit result alongside the school’s degree audit and financial-aid rules.

Difference from target

1. Enter each course value
Add the credit value assigned to each course in the semester.

2. Record uncompleted credits
Enter credits that will not count as completed for the period, such as a withdrawal or failing outcome under your school’s rules.

3. Set a target
Use your planned semester load or a minimum required for a program, scholarship, or status review.

4. Check completion
Review completed credits, attempted credits, and the completion percentage.

5. Verify institutional treatment
Confirm how your school handles repeats, pass/fail courses, transfers, and incompletes.

Attempted credits = Sum of entered course credits
Completed credits = Attempted credits − Credits not completed
Completion rate (%) = Completed credits ÷ Attempted credits × 100

The target difference equals completed credits minus the entered semester target.

What the result means

The result shows the credits expected to count as completed for the semester under the assumptions entered.

Institutional definitions may differ, especially for withdrawals, repeated courses, remedial classes, and transfer credit.

Given: Five courses carry 3, 4, 3, 3, and 2 credits, for 15 attempted credits. One 3-credit course is not completed.

Calculation: Completed credits = 15 − 3 = 12. Completion rate = 12 ÷ 15 × 100 = 80.0%.

Result: The student completes 12 credits, which is 3 credits below a 15-credit target.

Do withdrawn courses count as attempted credits?

Many institutions count some withdrawals as attempted credits, but policies differ. Enter them according to the definition used for the decision you are reviewing.

Can I enter half-credit courses?

Yes. The fields accept decimal values in half-credit increments, and you can adjust values to match your institution’s credit system.

Does this calculate GPA?

No. It totals credit progress only and does not use grades or grade points. Use a GPA or weighted-grade calculator for academic averages.

What happens if an incomplete is later finished?

Reduce the uncompleted-credit amount and recalculate once the course is officially completed. The timing of the update depends on institutional policy.

Can this determine full-time status?

It can total the credits you enter, but full-time thresholds vary by school, program, term type, and jurisdiction. Confirm the applicable threshold with the institution.
