Shopify Refund Calculator

The Shopify Refund Calculator works out the customer-facing refund after discounts, returned quantities, shipping adjustments, restocking deductions, and tax treatment. It is useful for store teams that need a consistent refund amount before processing a return or correcting an order.

By showing the gross refundable merchandise amount and each deduction separately, the calculator helps reduce manual mistakes and creates a transparent figure that can be checked against the store’s written refund policy. It is especially helpful for partial returns, discounted orders, and situations where outbound shipping is not refundable.

Formula:

Refund = Discounted merchandise + Refundable tax + Refunded shipping − Restocking deduction − Other deduction

Discounted merchandise = unit price × quantity × (1 − discount rate). Refundable tax = discounted merchandise × tax rate. Restocking deduction is calculated from discounted merchandise, not the original list price.

What the result means

The result is the estimated amount to return to the customer after policy-based additions and deductions.

Actual tax and payment processing reversals depend on jurisdiction, payment method, and Shopify settings.

Given: Two units at $40 each were purchased with a 10% discount. Refundable tax is 8.25%, shipping is not refunded, and there is no restocking charge.

Calculation: Discounted merchandise = $40 × 2 × 90% = $72. Tax = $72 × 8.25% = $5.94. Refund = $72 + $5.94 = $77.94.

Result: Estimated refund = $77.94.

This is the amount the merchant would return if the full discounted merchandise value and related tax are refundable.

Should the discount match the original order?

Yes. Refund calculations should normally preserve the effective discount paid by the customer rather than refunding the undiscounted list price.

When is shipping included?

Enter shipping only when your policy or the reason for the return makes it refundable. Otherwise leave the field at 0.

Is a restocking fee taken before or after tax?

This calculator applies it to discounted merchandise before adding refundable tax. Store policies and local rules can differ, so verify the method you use.

Can I calculate a partial refund for one item in a multi-item order?

Yes. Enter only the unit price and quantity for the returned item, along with the discount allocated to that item.

Why might Shopify show a different total?

Differences can come from line-item discount allocation, tax rounding, shipping tax, duties, gift cards, or payment adjustments stored on the original order.
