Solo Deadline Planner

The Solo Deadline Planner works backward from a personal workload to estimate how many calendar days are needed before a deadline. It accounts for total effort, daily work capacity, nonworking days, and a contingency buffer rather than assuming every day is fully available.

Use it for an assignment, application, portfolio piece, certification study plan, or another one-person deliverable. The result helps you select a safer start date or identify how much daily effort must increase when the available window is limited.

1. Estimate the work
Enter the total active hours required to finish the deliverable.

2. Set daily effort
Add the number of hours you can realistically work on each active day.

3. Define your weekly pattern
Enter how many days per week you will work on the deadline.

4. Add contingency
Include time for revision, delays, and estimation error.

5. Use the lead time
Count backward from the deadline by at least the displayed calendar days, rounding up for safety.

Buffered effort = Estimated work required × (1 + Buffer % ÷ 100)
Active workdays needed = Buffered effort ÷ Work hours per active day
Calendar days needed = Active workdays needed × 7 ÷ Active days per week

What the result means

Calendar days needed is the approximate lead time to reserve before the deadline under the entered weekly pattern.

The result is a duration, not a date. Round up when choosing a start day, and account separately for holidays or known blackout periods.

Given:
36 work hours, 3 hours per active day, 5 active days per week, and a 20% contingency buffer.

Calculation:
Buffered effort = 36 × 1.20 = 43.2 hours.
Active workdays needed = 43.2 ÷ 3 = 14.4 days.
Calendar days needed = 14.4 × 7 ÷ 5 = 20.16 days.

Result:
Plan to start at least 21 calendar days before the deadline after rounding up to a whole day.

Why should I round calendar days up?

A fraction of a day still requires scheduling time. Rounding up also avoids starting later than the model allows.

Should review and submission time be included?

Yes. Include them in estimated work or cover them with the contingency buffer.

How do holidays affect the result?

Reduce active days per week if holidays are typical, or add extra calendar days for specific known dates.

What if I can work different hours each day?

Use an average daily value or build a detailed schedule with the actual hours available on each date.

How is this different from a project calculator?

The deadline planner emphasizes lead time to a due date. A project calculator usually breaks total effort into phases and tracks progress.
