Return rate = Returned units ÷ Shipped units × 100
Returned value = Returned units × Average unit value
Retained value = (Shipped units − Returned units) × Average unit value

The model assumes the same average value for returned and retained units and does not estimate restocking recovery or return shipping.

What the result means

The main result is the percentage of shipped subscription units physically returned by customers.

Returns are not identical to refunds: a return can receive store credit, partial reimbursement, replacement, or no refund.

Given

An apparel subscription ships 5,200 boxes; 182 are returned. Average merchandise value per box is $38.

Calculation

Return rate = 182 ÷ 5,200 × 100 = 3.50%.
Returned value = 182 × $38 = $6,916.
Retained value = 5,018 × $38 = $190,684.

Result

The physical return rate is 3.50%.

Should exchanges count as returns?

Count the incoming item as a return if the goal is reverse-logistics volume. Track the replacement shipment separately.

Can I use orders instead of items?

Yes, but use orders for both shipped and returned counts. Item-level and order-level return rates answer different questions.

Why use a cohort instead of calendar-month returns?

Returns received this month may come from earlier shipments. A cohort matches outcomes to their original shipped units.

Does returned value equal financial loss?

No. Items may be resold, and return shipping, processing, damage, and refunds can differ from merchandise value.
