1. Enter the supply-chain footprint
Use the annual Scope 3 or other supply-chain emissions amount that your organization has chosen as the planning baseline.

2. Set the direct-reduction plan

What the result means

The main result is the approximate quantity of offsets to budget or procure for the selected residual-emissions coverage after planned direct reductions.

Actual eligibility, retirement rules, vintages, quality standards, and claim language depend on the offset program or organizational policy you use.

Given: 12,500 tCO2e of annual supply-chain emissions, an 18% internal reduction plan, 100% residual coverage, and a 5% buffer.

Calculation:
Residual emissions = 12,500 × (1 − 0.18) = 10,250 tCO2e.
Covered residual = 10,250 × 1.00 = 10,250 tCO2e.
Buffer = 10,250 × 0.05 = 512.5 tCO2e.
Offsets required = 10,250 + 512.5 = 10,762.5 tCO2e.

Result: Estimated offset requirement = 10,762.5 tCO2e.

This means the organization would plan to procure about 10,763 eligible offsets if one offset represents one metric ton of CO2e and the full residual footprint is covered.

Should I enter Scope 3 emissions only?

Use the supply-chain emissions boundary your program actually manages. For many organizations this is primarily Scope 3, but a procurement program may include only selected categories or suppliers.

Why is a buffer included?

A buffer can provide a conservative allowance for inventory uncertainty, procurement timing, or internal policy. Set it to 0% when no extra coverage is needed.

Can the coverage rate be below 100%?

Yes. Enter the portion of residual emissions you actually intend to offset, which is useful when only a business unit, product line, supplier group, or claim boundary is covered.

Does one offset always equal one tCO2e?

Does this determine whether a net-zero claim is valid?
