Weighted exam score = Objective % × (1 − Written weight) + Written % × Written weight

Calculation:
Objective = 72 ÷ 80 = 90%. Written = 38 ÷ 50 = 76%. Weighted score = 90% × 60% + 76% × 40% = 84.4%.

Result:
84.4%, which is 14.4 percentage points above the passing score.

Interpretation:
The exam passes, while the section breakdown shows that written performance lowered the overall score.

Why weight sections instead of adding raw points?

Weighting preserves the intended importance of each section even when their possible-point totals differ.

Can the written section weight be 0%?

Yes. A 0% weight makes the result depend entirely on the objective section; 100% does the reverse.

What happens if a student earns extra credit?

This version limits earned points to possible points. Add approved extra credit after calculating, or increase the possible-point structure consistently.

Is the pass margin a percentage change?

No. It is a percentage-point difference between the calculated score and the chosen passing score.

How is this different from an exam average calculator?

This tool combines sections within one exam. An exam average calculator typically combines several separate exam scores.
