Timber Frame Equipment Capacity Estimator

This estimator calculates daily timber-frame material-handling throughput from the average weight moved in one cycle, cycles per hour, scheduled hours, productive utilization, and equipment count. It can be used for preliminary checks on forklifts, telehandlers, cranes, or other repeated handling operations when the work can be represented by an average cycle.

The calculation is a throughput model, not an equipment-selection or safety check. The actual allowable load for any machine depends on its rated configuration, attachments, load center or radius, terrain, setup, manufacturer instructions, and site conditions. Enter an average working load only after verifying that it is permitted for the equipment and task. For mixed loads or widely varying cycle times, model separate handling groups instead of relying on one overall average.

Formula

Daily tons = (Load lb × Cycles/hour × Hours/day × Utilization × Units) / 2,000

Where:

  • Load lb = average handled weight per cycle in pounds.
  • Cycles/hour = completed cycles during productive operation.
  • Hours/day = scheduled equipment hours.
  • Utilization = productive fraction of scheduled time.
  • Units = identical equipment units.
  • 2,000 lb = one short ton.

Assumptions: The calculator assumes an average repeatable cycle and does not verify equipment ratings, load centers, lift heights, attachments, travel path, or ground conditions.

What the result means

Use the output as a project-planning estimate based on the values and assumptions entered above.

Actual field requirements can differ because project conditions, specifications, sequencing, and execution methods vary.

Given: 2,500 lb per cycle, 4.5 cycles/hour, 8 hours/day, 70% utilization, and 2 units.

Calculation: Effective cycles = 4.5 × 8 × 0.70 × 2 = 50.4 cycles/day. Weight handled = 2,500 × 50.4 = 126,000 lb/day. Tons = 126,000 ÷ 2,000 = 63 tons/day.

Result: 63.0 tons handled per day.

Interpretation: The two units provide an estimated daily handling throughput of 126,000 lb under the entered average conditions.

Can I use the machine’s maximum rated load as the average load?

Usually not. Rated capacity is a limit under specified conditions, while the throughput input should represent the average load actually moved. Verify every lift or carry against the applicable equipment limits.

Why is utilization separate from cycles per hour?

Cycles per hour describes the pace while productive cycling occurs. Utilization accounts for the share of scheduled time lost to waiting, positioning, coordination, charging or fueling, and similar interruptions.

How are pounds converted to tons?

The calculator divides pounds by 2,000 to report short tons. If your project uses metric tonnes, convert units separately.

What if two equipment units have different capacities?

Run them separately with their own payload, cycle, and utilization assumptions, then add the daily throughput results. Treating unlike units as identical can distort the estimate.

Does higher throughput mean the equipment is adequate?

Not by itself. Throughput must be considered alongside safe capacity, reach, access, lift height, attachments, travel routes, and the sequence of material demand.
