Timber Frame Waste Allowance Estimator
This estimator isolates the timber framing material added as a waste allowance above a net takeoff. Enter the usable board feet required by the design and a chosen waste percentage to see both the extra volume and the resulting gross order quantity. An optional recovery percentage shows how much of the calculated waste might be reusable elsewhere, without reducing the initial purchase quantity.
Waste is project-specific. Stock lengths, optimization of cuts, repetitive framing, defects, damage, storage, design changes, and the ability to reuse offcuts can all affect actual loss. The calculator uses a simple add-on percentage rather than a yield model, so it works best when the waste percentage is based on the project’s ordering method or prior comparable work. Keep the net takeoff and waste allowance separate so later procurement reviews can see which part came from design quantity and which part came from uncertainty.

Given: 22,000 net board feet, 7% waste, and 30% potential recovery.
Calculation: Waste = 22,000 × 0.07 = 1,540 board feet. Gross order = 22,000 + 1,540 = 23,540 board feet. Potential recovery = 1,540 × 0.30 = 462 board feet.
Result: 23,540 board feet to order.
Interpretation: The purchase allowance adds 1,540 board feet; about 462 board feet of that waste could be reusable if the entered recovery assumption is achieved.
Why is waste added to the net quantity instead of divided by yield?
This tool treats the entered percentage as an add-on allowance, which is common in preliminary ordering. A yield-based method gives a different result and should be used only when the percentage is defined as a loss fraction of purchased material.
Should recoverable offcuts reduce my order quantity?
Not automatically. Recovery depends on sizes, timing, storage, and approved reuse. The calculator reports recovery separately so the initial procurement plan is not understated.
Can the waste percentage be zero?
Yes. A zero value makes the gross order equal to the net takeoff, which can be useful for comparing alternative allowances.
What usually increases timber waste?
Irregular dimensions, limited stock lengths, frequent changes, damaged material, strict appearance requirements, and poor cut optimization can all increase waste. The appropriate allowance should come from the actual purchasing and cutting context.
