Tutor Fee Estimator

The Tutor Fee Estimator calculates a session quote from teaching time, preparation, travel, materials, and an optional platform fee. It reports both the student-facing charge and the tutor’s effective hourly earnings after direct costs.

The estimate helps independent tutors compare online and in-person arrangements or check whether a quoted rate covers unpaid preparation. Taxes, payment processing, cancellations, and local business rules are not included unless they are reflected in the entered costs.

Student fee = (Teaching hours × Teaching rate + Prep hours × Prep rate + Direct costs) ÷ (1 − Platform fee rate)

  • Direct costs — session-specific travel and materials
  • Platform fee rate — withheld share of the student payment as a decimal
  • Effective hourly earnings — net after platform fee and direct costs ÷ teaching plus prep hours

Assumptions: The quote is designed to recover the entered labor value and costs after the platform percentage.

What the result means

After the platform fee and $12 direct costs, modeled earnings are $80 for 2 total work hours, or $40 per hour.

Given:
1.5 teaching hours at $45, 0.5 prep hours at $25, $12 direct costs, and a 10% platform fee

Calculation:
Labor and costs = 1.5×45 + 0.5×25 + 12 = $92.00. Student fee = 92÷0.90 = $102.22.

Result:
Estimated session fee = $102.22.

Interpretation:
After the platform fee and $12 direct costs, modeled earnings are $80 for 2 total work hours, or $40 per hour.

Why divide by one minus the platform fee?

Adding 10% to the base would not fully offset a 10% deduction from the final payment. Grossing up solves for the required charge.

Should preparation use the same rate as teaching?

That is a business choice. The separate field lets you value preparation differently while keeping it visible.

Are taxes included?

No. Add a tax allowance to costs or adjust rates according to applicable local requirements.

How should group tutoring be priced?

Estimate the total session fee first, then divide or allocate it across learners according to the service model.

What does effective hourly earnings exclude?

It excludes overhead not entered here, such as marketing, administration, software subscriptions, and unpaid cancellations.
