The Virtual Power Plant System Sizing Calculator estimates the enrolled capacity needed to reliably deliver a target grid-service or load-reduction level. It increases the target to account for participation, expected performance, and a derating or availability factor, then calculates the associated energy requirement for the entered dispatch duration.
The result supports early portfolio planning and enrollment targets. It is not a detailed asset optimization model; individual device constraints, coincidence, feeder limits, communications, rebound effects, and program qualification rules still need separate analysis.

Delivered energy requirement—

Combined delivery factor—
1. Define delivered power
Enter the MW the portfolio must provide at the grid or program meter.
2. Set service duration
Use the required continuous event or dispatch duration.
3. Estimate participation
Enter the share of enrolled resources expected to be available and opt in when called.
4. Add performance and derating
Use realistic delivery and availability factors based on asset or program data.
5. Review enrollment need
Use the calculated MW as a screening enrollment target and check the energy requirement separately.
Result: Enroll about 13.76 MW of capacity to target 10 MW of delivered service under these assumptions.
Why is required enrolled capacity larger than target power?
Not every enrolled resource is expected to participate or deliver fully. The calculator adds capacity to offset those expected shortfalls.
Can I enter 100% for all factors?
Yes, but that assumes every enrolled resource is available and performs at the full expected level. That is usually an optimistic planning case.
Does the energy requirement include efficiency losses?
The delivered energy figure does not. The enrolled energy equivalent reflects the larger capacity but detailed storage efficiency should be modeled separately.
How should I choose participation rate?
Use measured opt-in or availability data from similar customers and seasons when possible. For a new program, test a conservative range.
Does this size individual assets?
No. It estimates aggregate portfolio capacity. Asset-level sizing requires device power, energy, duty cycle, communications, and customer constraints.
