The WiFi Network Data Usage Calculator estimates how much traffic a group of WiFi users can generate over a day, month, billing cycle, or other planning period. It converts average active throughput into total data volume by accounting for the number of users, the hours each user is active, the number of days, and an activity factor that represents how much of that time is actually spent transferring data.
This is useful for sizing internet plans, WAN links, data caps, guest-network allowances, and reporting expectations. It is not a packet-level forecast: real consumption changes with streaming quality, software updates, cloud synchronization, caching, and idle time. The activity factor helps avoid assuming that every user sustains the entered Mbps for every active hour, while still keeping the calculation transparent enough to adjust for different usage patterns.

Assumptions: The conversion uses decimal units: 1 GB = 1,000 MB and 8 bits = 1 byte. The entered Mbps is averaged across active transfer time and does not separately model upload versus download.
What the result means
The main result is the estimated aggregate data volume transferred by all entered users over the selected period.
Large downloads, operating-system updates, backups, and high-resolution streaming can cause real usage to differ materially from a simple average-rate model.

- 30% activity factor
Calculation:
Usage = 80 × 2.5 × 5 × 30 × 0.30 × 0.45
Usage = 4,050 GB
Result: 4,050 GB for the 30-day period
Interpretation: The group is estimated to transfer about 135 GB per day on average, or about 50.63 GB per user over the month.
Why does the calculator use an activity factor?
Users rarely sustain the same throughput for every hour they are online. The activity factor represents the share of active time during which the entered Mbps is actually being transferred.
Are the results in decimal or binary gigabytes?
The calculator uses decimal gigabytes, where 1 GB equals 1,000 MB. Storage systems and operating systems may display binary-based units differently.
Can I use this for a guest WiFi data cap?
Yes, as a planning estimate. Use realistic guest counts, hours, and throughput assumptions, then compare the result with the provider cap and any traffic-management policy.
Should uploads and downloads be entered separately?
This version uses one combined average throughput value. If upload and download are measured separately, add their average Mbps values before entering the combined rate.
Why can actual monthly usage be much higher than the estimate?
Averages can miss short but very large transfers such as software images, cloud backups, game downloads, and 4K streaming. Increase the average rate or activity factor if those workloads are common.
