Air Freight Utilization Calculator

This calculator measures how much of an air freight movement capacity is used or booked relative to the capacity available for the same period or departure. The percentage helps planners distinguish underused allocations from tightly loaded ones and quickly identify cases where planned volume exceeds the stated capacity.

The calculation works with any consistent capacity unit, including kg, as long as both values use the same unit and scope. It is a simple utilization metric, so it does not account for dimensional constraints, load compatibility, payload limits, or operational restrictions that can make nominal capacity unusable in practice.

Utilization (%) = Used capacity ÷ Available capacity × 100

Used and available capacity must represent the same unit and scope. Values above 100% indicate planned or recorded usage greater than the entered available capacity.

What the result means

The result is the share of entered capacity currently used or booked.

A high percentage does not prove that every physical or operational constraint has been satisfied.

Given: used capacity = 9,300 kg; available capacity = 12,000 kg.

Calculation: 9,300 ÷ 12,000 × 100 = 77.5%.

Result: Utilization = 77.5%.

The remaining nominal capacity is 2,700 kg before considering operational constraints.

Can utilization be above 100%?

Yes. That means used or booked volume is greater than the available capacity entered. It may indicate overbooking, a capacity-data mismatch, or a need for additional space.

Do the two capacity values have to use the same unit?

Yes. Mixing units makes the ratio meaningless. Convert both values to the same unit before calculating.

Is weight utilization the same as volume utilization?

No. A shipment can be light but bulky, or dense but compact. Calculate the constraint that matters for the service, and consider checking both when relevant.

Does unused capacity always mean more freight can be accepted?

Not necessarily. Dimensions, dangerous-goods rules, load balance, equipment type, and other restrictions may prevent nominal spare capacity from being usable.

How should I use this percentage operationally?

Track it consistently by comparable departures or periods. Changes over time can help reveal underused allocations, recurring capacity pressure, or planning assumptions that need adjustment.
