Aquaponic System Feed Conversion Calculator

The Aquaponic System Feed Conversion Calculator computes feed conversion ratio (FCR) from dry feed offered and fish biomass gain over the same production period. FCR is expressed as kilograms of feed per kilogram of biomass gain, so a lower value indicates less feed input for each kilogram of gain, provided feed accounting, mortality handling, and weighing methods are comparable.

This page also allows uneaten or recovered feed to be entered separately. The calculator subtracts that amount from feed offered to estimate net feed consumed before dividing by biomass gain. It is useful for batch review, comparing feeding strategies, or checking production records, but the number should be interpreted alongside fish species, size, water temperature, health, stocking density, feed composition, and mortality. It does not estimate plant-side nutrient recovery or the complete nutrient balance of an aquaponic system.

1. Enter feed offered
Use the dry feed mass dispensed during the production period.

2. Subtract uneaten or recovered feed
Enter measurable feed that was not consumed so net feed input is not overstated.

Use fish biomass at the beginning of the same period.

Enter fish biomass remaining at the end plus harvested or otherwise removed biomass attributable to the period.

5. Review biomass gain
The calculator uses ending biomass plus removed biomass minus starting biomass. The result must be positive for FCR to be meaningful.

6. Interpret the FCR
The main result reports kilograms of net feed per kilogram of biomass gain; compare values only across similarly measured production records.

What the result means

The main result is the net dry-feed mass required per kilogram of calculated fish biomass gain over the same accounting period.

Mortality and removed fish must be handled consistently. If removed biomass is not weighed or losses are excluded, FCR comparisons can be distorted.

Given: 480 kg feed offered, 8 kg uneaten, 600 kg starting biomass, 940 kg ending biomass, and 70 kg harvested during the period.

Calculation: Net feed = 480 − 8 = 472 kg. Biomass gain = 940 + 70 − 600 = 410 kg. FCR = 472 ÷ 410 = 1.1512. Feed efficiency = 410 ÷ 472 × 100 = 86.86%.

Result: FCR ≈ 1.151 kg feed/kg biomass gain.

About 115.1 kg of net feed was used for each 100 kg of biomass gain in this accounting period.

What does an FCR of 1.2 mean?

It means the recorded system used about 1.2 kg of net feed for each 1 kg of calculated fish biomass gain during the same period. It does not by itself explain why the ratio occurred.

Why include harvested or removed biomass?

Fish taken out during the period contributed to production gain. Adding their biomass prevents the ending standing biomass from understating total output, provided the removals are measured consistently.

Should mortalities be entered as removed biomass?

Only if your accounting method intentionally includes their measured biomass in production gain, which is uncommon for performance reporting. More often, mortality is tracked separately so it is not treated as productive output.

Can FCR be compared across species or life stages?

Only with caution. Species, fish size, temperature, health, feed composition, and husbandry all affect feed conversion, so the most useful comparisons use similar biological and operational conditions.

Is feed efficiency just the inverse of FCR?

In this calculator, feed efficiency is biomass gain divided by net feed, expressed as a percentage. It is mathematically the reciprocal of FCR multiplied by 100 when net feed is greater than zero.
