What the result means

Given: elapsed time = 360 minutes; completed output = 480 batches.

Calculation: 360 ÷ 480 = 0.75 minute per batche. 0.75 × 60 = 45 seconds per batche.

Result: Average cycle time is 45 seconds per batche, equivalent to 80 batches per hour.

This average is only comparable with other periods when the same elapsed-time boundary is used.

Should breaks and planned stops be included?

Include them only if your definition of cycle time is intended to measure calendar or scheduled elapsed time. Excluding them gives a closer view of running process pace.

Can cycle time be calculated from one item?

Yes, but a single observation can be noisy. Using a representative period with multiple completed outputs usually gives a more stable average.

Why is the hourly rate only an equivalent?

It converts the observed average cycle time into a simple rate. It does not prove the process can sustain that pace continuously for every hour.

How should parallel equipment be handled?
