Budget Split Calculator

The Budget Split Calculator divides a shared total among people using either equal shares or an adjustable weighted share for one participant. It can be used for trips, group meals, household purchases, events, and other costs that need a clear per-person allocation.

The result shows the standard equal share and, when a weight is applied, the selected participant’s share and the amount paid by each remaining participant. The weighted option is useful when one person uses more resources or has agreed to cover a larger portion.

1. Enter the shared amount
Use the cost before any optional percentage charge.

2. Set the group size
Enter everyone who will contribute.

3. Choose a weight
Use 1 for an equal share. A value of 1.5 means the selected person pays one and a half standard shares.

4. Add a tip or surcharge
Enter a percentage applied to the entire shared amount.

5. Record any payment already made
Enter prepaid funds to see the remaining amount to collect.

6. Review each share
Use the selected-person and other-person figures to settle the cost.

Adjusted total = Total × (1 + Extra rate)
Share unit = Adjusted total ÷ (Selected weight + Other people)
Selected share = Share unit × Selected weight
Each other share = Share unit

All people other than the selected participant are assigned a weight of 1. Use a selected weight of 1 for a fully equal split.

What the result means

The main result is the total after the optional tip or surcharge; the breakdown shows how it is allocated.

Rounding individual shares to cents may leave a one-cent difference that should be assigned manually.

Given:
$480 total, 4 people, selected weight 1.5, no tip.

Calculation:
Weight total = 1.5 + 3 = 4.5
Share unit = $480 ÷ 4.5 = $106.67
Selected share = $106.67 × 1.5 = $160.00

Result:
$160.00 for the selected person and about $106.67 for each of the other three.

Interpretation:
The weighted participant covers one-third of the total, while the rest split the balance evenly.

How do I make the split equal?

Set the selected person weight to 1. The selected share and each other share will then be the same.

Can more than one person have a special weight?

This version adjusts one selected participant only. For multiple custom weights, repeat the calculation or use a spreadsheet with one weight per person.

Is the extra percentage applied before splitting?

Yes. The tip or surcharge increases the shared total first, then the adjusted amount is divided.

What happens if someone already paid the full total?

The remaining amount becomes zero. The share breakdown still shows how much each person ultimately owes.

Why can rounded shares differ by a cent?

Currency is displayed to cents, while the underlying division may produce repeating decimals. Assign any rounding difference to one participant.
