The Class Semester Calculator summarizes a course term from completed and planned coursework. It combines earned points, remaining points, and the weight of a final assessment to estimate the current grade, the projected semester grade, and the score needed to reach a chosen target.

Use it when a class is partway through the semester and you need a practical answer to questions such as “Where do I stand now?” or “What final-exam score would put me at 85%?” The result is an estimate based on the grading structure you enter, so it is most useful when your syllabus clearly states the points or weights used by the instructor.

Current grade (%) = Earned points ÷ Points possible so far × 100
Projected semester grade (%) = (Earned points + Expected remaining points) ÷ Total course points × 100
Final points needed = Target % × Total course points − Earned points − Expected remaining points

Total course points include graded work, remaining non-final work, and the final exam. This model assumes a points-based class and does not apply category weights unless those weights have already been converted into equivalent points.

What the result means

The projected percentage shows the course grade before adding an assumed final-exam score; the needed-final result tells you how many final points would reach the target.

Actual grades can differ because of dropped assignments, extra credit, curves, category weights, or instructor rounding rules.

Given: 420 points earned out of 500, 180 remaining non-final points with 150 expected, a 200-point final, and an 85% target.

Calculation: Total points = 500 + 180 + 200 = 880. Projected points before the final = 420 + 150 = 570. Projected semester grade = 570 ÷ 880 × 100 = 64.77%. Target points = 0.85 × 880 = 748. Final points needed = 748 − 570 = 178.

Result: The student needs 178 out of 200 points on the final, or 89%, to finish at 85%.

Does this work for weighted grade categories?

Not directly. Convert each category to equivalent course points, or use a calculator designed specifically for weighted categories.

What should I enter for ungraded assignments?

Put their maximum points in remaining non-final points and enter a realistic expected score for those assignments.

Why can the projected percentage look low?

The denominator includes all course points, including the final, while the numerator does not assume a final score. That makes the result a pre-final projection.

What if the required final score is above the final maximum?

The selected target is not reachable under the entered assumptions unless extra credit, a curve, or another grading adjustment applies.

Should I use syllabus points or gradebook points?

Use the system that controls the official course grade. When the gradebook excludes future work, rely on the syllabus for remaining point values.
