Class Homework Calculator

Calculate a homework average from completed assignments and estimate the category’s weighted contribution to the course grade. Enter total points earned, total points possible, the number of assignments, and the homework category weight.

The calculator also shows average points per assignment, which can help compare workload and performance across a set of homework tasks. It uses a points-based average; courses that average assignment percentages equally may produce a different result when assignments have unequal point values.

1. Total earned points
Add the credited points from completed homework.

2. Total possible points
Add the maximum points for the same assignments.

3. Enter assignment count
Use the number included in the totals.

4. Set category weight
Enter homework’s share of the final course grade.

5. Review the contribution
Use the weighted value when estimating the overall class grade.

Homework average = Total points earned ÷ Total points possible × 100

Average points per assignment use the assignment count. Weighted contribution multiplies the homework average by the category weight.

What the result means

The result is the points-based percentage earned across the homework set.

Equal-weight assignment averaging can differ from a total-points calculation.

Given: 410 points earned out of 450 across 10 assignments, with homework worth 20%.

Calculation: 410 ÷ 450 × 100 = 91.1%; 91.1% × 0.20 = 18.22 points.

Result: Homework average is 91.1%.

Should missing homework be included as zero?

Include it if the gradebook counts it as zero and its possible points are part of the category total.

What if assignments are equally weighted?

Average their individual percentages instead; that can differ from total points when assignment sizes vary.

Can I use decimal points?

Yes. The calculator accepts fractional earned and possible points.

Does the assignment count affect the percentage?

No. It only affects the per-assignment averages.

How do dropped assignments affect the result?

Remove both earned and possible points for any assignment the instructor officially drops.
