The Climbing Grade Recovery Needs Estimator combines climbing workload, sleep, finger/forearm soreness, and session intensity into a simple recovery score. It is intended for planning between hard climbing days, especially when projecting, steep bouldering, or repeated high-grade attempts leave local tissues and grip feeling taxed.

Enter the grade index, hard attempts, sleep, and current soreness. The calculator reports a 0–100 recovery-need score and a suggested interval before another similarly demanding session. This does not diagnose tendon or pulley conditions; localized sharp pain, swelling, loss of function, or worsening symptoms need more than a generic recovery estimate.

  • Soreness = ordinary finger/forearm soreness from 0 to 10

Does the suggested window mean I am safe to climb hard afterward?

No. It is a planning estimate, not clearance for training. Your actual symptoms and movement quality matter more than the clock.

What soreness should I enter?

Use ordinary post-training finger and forearm soreness. Do not treat sharp, focal, or worsening pain as a normal soreness score.

Why are hard attempts weighted heavily?

High-intensity attempts can create substantial local stress even when total session time is short, so the model emphasizes attempt difficulty and count.

Can good sleep reduce the score?

Yes, modestly. The sleep modifier can lower the workload contribution when sleep exceeds 7.5 hours, but it cannot erase high soreness.

How is this different from climbing training load?

Training load estimates the work performed. Recovery needs adds sleep and soreness to translate that work into a rest-planning indicator.
