Climbing Grade Training Load Calculator

The Climbing Grade Training Load Calculator estimates session load from route or boulder difficulty, number of attempts, and average effort. It gives climbers a repeatable workload measure that can help compare a short session of hard projecting with a longer session of easier volume.

Enter a normalized grade index, attempts, average effort rating, and active climbing time. The calculator combines these into load units and also reports difficulty-adjusted attempts and load per active minute. Because holds, wall angle, movement style, rest duration, and individual strengths are not captured, use the result mainly for within-athlete trend tracking.

1. Set the difficulty index
Use the same 1–40 mapping you use in your climbing log.

2. Count meaningful attempts
Include route burns or boulder attempts that contributed real work; skip trivial warm-up movement.

3. Rate average effort
Enter an RPE from 1 to 10 for the climbing work, not the entire time spent at the gym.

4. Enter active climbing time
Estimate minutes actually spent climbing, excluding long rests and social downtime.

5. Compare load units
Use the total and load-per-minute values to compare sessions with different structures.

Where:

  • Grade index = normalized difficulty from 1 to 40
  • Attempts = meaningful climbing attempts
  • RPE = average perceived effort from 1 to 10
  • Active minutes = estimated time actively climbing

Assumptions: The square-root time term prevents session duration from dominating the score. The output is an internal workload unit, not a physiological measurement.

This calculator provides an estimate for planning and comparison; real-world outcomes can vary with conditions and individual factors.

Given:

  • Grade index = 20
  • Attempts = 12
  • Average effort = 7.5/10
  • Active time = 55 minutes

Calculation:
Difficulty-adjusted attempts = 12 × (0.5 + 20 ÷ 40) = 12.0
Effort factor = 7.5 ÷ 10 = 0.75
Time factor = √(55 ÷ 30) ≈ 1.354
Training load = 12 × 0.75 × 1.354 × 10 ≈ 121.9

Result: 121.9 load units.

What counts as an attempt?

Count a meaningful try that creates training stress, including unsuccessful project burns. Do not count every isolated move during a warm-up as a full attempt.

Why use active climbing time instead of total gym time?

Long rest periods are important for performance but do not create the same direct workload as climbing. Active time keeps the duration input more comparable across sessions.

Can I combine routes and boulders in one entry?

You can, but the grade-index mapping must make sense across both. Separate calculations are usually easier to interpret.

Does the load value predict injury risk?

No. It is a workload-tracking estimate and cannot capture tissue capacity, movement quality, prior injury, or sudden pain.

How should I use load per minute?

It helps distinguish dense, intense sessions from longer sessions with similar total load. Compare it against your own historical sessions rather than an external universal target.
