Total capacity and occupied volume must use the same unit.

What the result means

The utilization percentage shows how much of the usable temperature-controlled capacity is occupied.

A preferred utilization range is operation-specific and depends on product mix, airflow needs, access, and required contingency capacity.

Given:
10,000 ft³ nominal capacity, 10% reserve, and 7,200 ft³ occupied.

Calculation:
Usable capacity = 10,000 × 0.90 = 9,000 ft³. Utilization = 7,200 ÷ 9,000 × 100 = 80.0%. Remaining usable capacity = 1,800 ft³.

Result:
Cold-chain utilization = 80.0%.

Interpretation:
The facility is using four-fifths of the space intended for product while retaining 1,800 ft³ of usable headroom.

Why calculate utilization against usable capacity instead of total capacity?

Usable capacity better reflects the portion of refrigerated space intended for product after reserving operational buffer. Comparing against total nominal capacity can make utilization look artificially low.

What should be included in occupied volume?

Include the physical refrigerated space consumed by inventory, pallets, totes, staging, and required spacing if those items reduce available cold capacity.

What does utilization above 100% mean?
